WEAU lets us know some exciting news:

"It's the ultimate goal for hockey players-- the Stanley Cup. Now, that cup is headed to Eau Claire!

"The Detroit Red Wings celebrated their win earlier this year, but Team Scout David Kolb wants to share the victory with his home town of Eau Claire. Kolb is a Memorial High School graduate.

"He'll show off the cup Sunday July 6 at Hobbs Ice Center, but that's all we know for now.

"The Parks and Recreation Department will let everyone know as soon as a time is set to check out the cup."

Sounds like fun, eh?

False Start

Okay, my first vist to the WIAA state basketball tournament lasted as long as the hoopla surrounding a high school dance. It came and went without nary a minute to realize it had passed by, and in the process made a liar out of me. I was supposed to give regular updates from the boy's tournament last week, but with Regis and North both losing in the first round, I was back in Eau Claire both the first fish had dropped in the oil on Friday morning.

But, America is built upon the premise of second chances and fresh starts and thanks to Joe Doucette's Colfax girl's basketball team I'll be back down there on Thursday morning. Some may remember that I gave Mondovi the edge to make the state tournament in DIII and slighted Colfax as a byproduct but I have enough of an ego cushion to admit I was wrong. Thanks to a softer region and then excellent shooting and the ability to stay out of foul trouble in their sectional games, the Vikings are back at state for the first time since 1994.

The 2007-2008 Colfax Vikings are proof that to make a run in the playoffs, a little luck and then great play are needed. The luck came in the form of being placed in a regional that gave them a by and was one in which they were the lone team above .500%. They then proved they belonged in the sectionals with a dominated win on Thursday and a great comeback versus an Osseo-Fairchild team that was viewed to be the favorite.

So I am heading back to state and hopefully this stay is longer but that is up to Colfax. Many of the post-game comments were a little troublesome as players were quoted as saying they were "just happy to be going down to Madison" and things of that nature which is usually a foreshadow to a quick exit. However, that was right after the game and as the days go on, usually that attitude changes.

Scott Montesano's First Blog Entry

Congratulations, you’ve found the newest source of entertainment in Western Wisconsin (cue: marching band fan fare) you’ve reached the Scott Montesano blog! I’ll pause for all the applause…thanks…you’re too kind…thanks…okay enough. I must speak now.
Yep, this is the first installment of my blog done in coordination with Sportsradio 1400’s new partnership with Chippewa Guide. At least once a week, I’ll be giving my ever-so important and relevant musings on local sports, local pop culture and anything else that tickles the fancy. In many ways, it’ll be no different than the way I do sports broadcasts throughout the region. That’s assuming you know who I am and while a few out there do, even my 1985 buick-sized ego understands a few out there have never heard of me.

Laziness from many of us dictates it that we also try to chip away at stories from the bottom up. Its no different than eating an ice cream sundae from the bottom of the cone backwards to the cherry (unless it’s a drumstick, in which case, the hidden nugget of fudgy goodness is worth it…could drumsticks be causing Americans to cut corners? What about stuffed crust pizzas? Another topic for another day). Point being, we give necessary details, but forget about the added ingredients that truly give a story the added-value that makes it interesting.

So it is when many people introduce themselves. They’ll mention who they are, what they do, possibly the celebrity they’d allow their significant other to spend one night with, etc. and then leave the story hanging, with no promise of every finishing it. People justify it in their minds as they talk or write that “no one wants to hear about me.” Truth is...you’re right. However, we all have time to kill and in this age when we all devour information at the rate of cold medicine at a pharmacy in January, we find it interesting. Long story, I’m not skimping on my introduction to those new to me.

I’m originally from Utica, NY…in the middle of upstate and nowhere near Times Square. I’ve been to NYC about five times and twice was only to see the NY Yankees. I went to college at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY where I graduated in 2004 and was named the Communications Student of the class of 2004. No no, I wasn’t the only student, I was named the BEST…let me pat myself on the back for that. After college I bounced to Maine, then North Dakota then Vermont calling minor league baseball and hockey before being pulled to Eau Claire to work with the Eau Claire Express. Currently, I work as the radio voice of the Express on Moose 106.7, where this will be my third summer. I also work at the Clear Channel group of stations in the Chippewa Valley announcing high school sports and UWEC Blugold women’s basketball and men’s hockey on Sportsradio 1400.

I love Italian food, basically anything with noodles, cheese and sauce will do. I love all sports, with baseball being a long-distance leader, but I’ll watch anything and that includes soccer and box lacrosse! I also love my girlfriend who is still stuck in North Dakota, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for me for it gives me more time to stall to earn money for a cheap ring. Over time, more will come out of course.

So once again welcome to this blog, and to Chippewa Guide as a whole. This whole site is still in the developmental phase, and having spoken with Steve, I am very excited to be a part of this and at the ground floor of seeing this site take off. Over the next few months, more and more content and businesses will be getting involved, further directing the site and making this a MUST VIEW for everyone on a daily basis.

BTW for a glimpse of what I like to write about, here is the link for the blog I had when I was announcing hockey in Fargo, ND last year http://radioscott.blogspot.com/
