April 21st: by Will Fantle from the ; 7-8PM, Room 144, Price Commons. Across America, organic agriculture has tossed an economic lifeline to struggling family farmers. Consumers, hungry for food produced with more meaning and without hormones, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, have partnered with organic farmers to fuel a $20 billion annual business that’s been growing at a 20% annual rate for more than a decade. But storm clouds are gathering. Seeking their slice of the booming and lucrative organic pie, giant corporations are trying to weaken or water down organic standards. Huge factory farms have moved into organic production. And cheap organic imports, from countries with questionable organic practices, are starting to flood America. What’s the future for family farmers in organic agriculture? Does organic mean local? Will ethics, integrity and sustainability remain core organic values? The Cornucopia Institute’s Will Fantle will address these pressing concerns during his presentation.
