Description of Business:

Wares supplied by Dunn County Pottery include stoneware and porcelain pots for use in the kitchen and at the table, and terracotta pots for the yard and garden.

John Thomas set up DCP in Downsville in 1973 after an apprenticeship in Japan in 1970 and 1971. The pots are wheel thrown using a mixture of clays from Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri, and the local area. After glazing with a variety of clay slips and glazes, the pots are fired in an electric, gas, or wood kiln. John's favorite come from the wood kiln. Wood ash from the fires and rhythmic fluctuation of oxygen content in the kiln combine to paint, or flash the surface of the pots in unpredictable patterns. During the 20 - 32 hours of firing, the pots are showered in ash, resulting in a myriad of colors and textures. No two are alike.

Editorial Review:

John Thomas produces fine pottery pieces that neatly straddle the line between the purely decorative and extremely practical. His store is often self-service, but carries a very large array of pottery. A fine place to look for one-of-a-kind gifts.
